Abstract

The search to achieve sustainable competitive advantage has significantly influenced approaches to human resource management. Attempts to achieve certainty and legitimacy in business practices have led to the homogenization of organisational forms and structures. The purpose of the study is to examine competitive strategy and human resource management practice in the highly cost-focused retail sector. The findings support Schuler et al. (1997) framework for the integration of business strategy and HRM and evidence of close environmental monitoring and mimetic tendencies amongst firms within the three market segments.
