Abstract
One of Barack Obama’s predecessors as United States (US) president, Bill Clinton, was famously elected on the catchphrase ‘it’s the economy, stupid’. This was a reminder that what mattered to the electorate was disposable income and job security. Mr Obama’s inheritance is a US economy in recession, with shrinking disposable income and rising unemployment. The same challenge faces the UK and other countries throughout the world.
