Abstract

This combination of video excerpts and reflective commentary explores the realisation of the 2004 piece Acoustic/Electric, a three-hour long living installation performance, at the Diapason Sound Art Gallery in New York during late 2004. The performance attempted to integrate the design of costuming materials as a full partner in the generation of a piece of extended voice performance in a sound art environment. Through audiovisual material and the presentation of the textual voices of the collaborating artists, we draw the reader into poetic and practical identification with the aesthetic and creative motivations and issues involved with the performance moment.

Additional Information: This article is a follow-up of a performance by the same title, and was published for the purpose of dissemination of the research results of the said practical project. Maclaurin, in collaboration with Bonenfant, found that there were three stages to the research projects. Firstly, the wigs were originally designed and realised through a documented collaborative process for a specially commissioned live work ‘Acoustic-electric’ at the Diapason Gallery, New York in November 2004, funded through a Queen Margaret University's small research grant. Secondly, the documented process was then translated into a performed paper given at the 2005 PARIP (Practice as Research in Performance) conference. It was programmed in the high profile solo evening slot in the main theatre. (See programme.) The paper was well received and resulted in an invitation to Maclaurin to offer a research seminar at CSSD. Thirdly, the final written paper with accompanying video was published in ’Body Space Technology’ Volume 6. The project’s outcomes can be allied both to scenographic research and to the growth of research both in the Art and Design and Performing Arts fields into the processes and practices of creating (for example, ResCen, the Centre for Research into Creation in the Performing Arts.). It is also part of a developing research hub into costume, which revolves around an annual conference that brings together practitioners and researchers in the field.
