What are the processes necessary in transforming a historical person into a dramatical character in a historical play?
Abstract
This study examines the process and methodology underlying the
dramatization of a historical event with specific focus on transformation of a
historical figure into a dramatic character.
The study combines the use of playwriting guides, historical records,
biographies of Henry VII as well as examples of historical plays by
established authors such as Shakespeare to inform my own processes of
writing a historical play centred on the character of Henry VII.
Limiting the plot to a specific period in the reign of Henry VII, I have been
able to identify and evaluate the process of transformation from historical
person into dramatic character. While every effort has been made to stay
close to the historical facts, the dramatization will always necessitate a level
of artistic freedom that questions the level of authenticity any historical
person will possess within dramatic writing.
