The majority of children with additional support needs are cared for at home by their parents. Home modifications, which aim to promote independence and safety for the child, also has implications for parents and rest of the family living in the home. Little is known about parents' acceptance of home modifications aside from the process or outcome. In order to investigate parents' acceptance of home modifications, a literature review was carried out. Studies on the meaning, or experience of home, as well as studies exploring the outcomes of home modifications for families were included. The search revealed a wealth of research concerning the meaning of home, however, research addressing parents and families' experiences of home modifications was limited. A total of 13 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Results indicate that the home is more than a physical entity, that it encompasses complex emotional and personal connections which relate to occupational roles, hopes for the future and social relationships. Home modifications can impact both positively and negatively on these associations. Furthermore, the complex relationship with home, along with the symbolic meaning behind home modification can be challenging for parents. Confronting their child's condition, as well as relinquishing control to professionals were found to challenge parenting role and impact on their acceptance of home modification.
