Aims: The project aims to uncover the present business situation for Micro to Small Retailers in Musselburgh with regards to competition, difficulties. The study also aims to uncover attitudes towards potential collaborative partnership for collectively purchasing energy and gain a discount. The Study context is focussed, nearby to Queen Margaret University. It is focussed on small retailers which are classed as competing with large supermarket firms. Generally they are Micro businesses, employing less than 10 people. The study investigates their attitudes towards the effect of the current economy, competition and opportunities available in the local area. Attitudes towards collaboration include the problems or reasons retailers might have for not doing so, why they might consider doing so and the difficulties they see in implementing this kind of project. The impact of energy costs is also investigated. The project uses a mixed methods approach to investigation. Face to face semistructured interviews are Qualitative techniques used to gain textual information. Likert-Type scales were used as a quantitative method to measure the strength of opinion or feeling to increase confidence in causal direction. Interviews were thematically analysed to gain clarity and improve surety. Transcription contained in the Appendices. Results and Discussion focus on the main themes are presented in this section. Conclusions and Recommendations draws together information and analysis to provide a likely outcome of the study. Basis for further research is emphasised while, suggestion for further research is also made. Recommendations for further research projects are based on this information and current market conditions, nevertheless there is also speculation for other ways to gain an advantage for small businesses borne from Government Energy Schemes and possible avenues for investigation.
