Abstract
This study aimed to investigate whether or not gender plays a significant role in determining the job satisfaction of frontline Tesco employees. This was done by breaking this aim up into three objectives and these are: (1) to analyse and discuss the key principles of job satisfaction. (2) To investigate whether or not gender plays a significant role when determining the level of job satisfaction of retail employees. (3) Identify the best possible way that managers may improve job satisfaction within Tesco.
A quantitative research approach was used in order to investigate this aim. In addition, 89 responses were gained through the use of both an electronic survey and field work.
The results from this research concluded that gender does not appear to play a significant role when determining the job satisfaction levels of Tesco employees. That being said, some key themes arose through the results including:
• workplace flexibility is impacted by gender,
•gender may determine the amount of stress an employee experiences at work,
• And, gender may impact satisfaction levels with opportunities for promotion. Although this dissertation has been carefully prepared, there remains to be a few limitations and shortcomings. For example, a clear limitation would be the time scale and budget in which the research had to be carried out.
This study has provided an important insight into the role gender plays when determining job satisfaction levels of frontline retail employees. It has also identified key ways in which Tesco managers may increase the satisfaction levels of their employees.
