(2016) What criteria would be involved in creating a set which becomes the living performance?, no. 30.
Although theatre has become a highly visual as well as aural medium of storytelling, set design has not been fully realised as an individual art form. This dissertation conducts research into what criteria are involved in creating a model box of a set that is the living performance, meaning a theatrical performance with no actors. It explores the process of researching, designing and creating such a performance, contrasted with traditional set designing purposes. Attention will be paid to which criteria will lead to a style of performance that allows the audience to engage fully with the story being conveyed. Research of previous efforts in this field, paired with in-depth practical research, will illuminate the possibilities of creating a full scale set-based performance, and illustrate that it requires similar criteria to creating a traditional set design, but in a completely different order and manner.
