    Abstract
Identity within Scotland and Scottish theatre has been intertwined for centuries. However, identity has been questioned more and more in recent years, especially with growing social and political unrest. Furthermore, new studies and terminologies begin to confuse the matter more, making the definition of identity unclear. Post-colonialism and transnationalism are two discourses that may help with understanding the question of identity. This dissertation will explore the plays of Sue Glover, Stephen Greenhorn, Liz Lochhead, Gregory Burke, David Greig and Rona Munro. With the application of post-colonial and transnational theories to specific plays by these authors, this study will explore how Scotland views the identity of herself and of others. Within selected plays, this study with give an in-depth textual analysis which gains a deeper understanding of the role of transnationalism and transnationalism within Scottish theatre and identity. What this study will explore is how the plays are applicable to the theories and how they can help in redefining Scottish identity.
