    Abstract
This study examines and identifies the complexities of literary adaptation from one medium to another by using Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to detail the relationship between the novel and the stage adaptation. It aims to give a complete picture of selected parts of the adaptation process. The study uses careful analysis of both the source text and the adapted material to show the changes made from novel to stage and the difficulties that an adaptor faces when transposing the two different media. The outcomes for this study look again at the differences between Roald Dahl's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and David Grieg's musical version but also how they are compatible with each other. It is the sense of continuity between the two media that allows Greig's script to fully explore the imaginative world of Dahl's creation. Suggestions are made about the directions that further research could take, either comparing other adaptations of the same text, or further adaptations of Roald Dahl's work.
