Introduction: This thesis is an attempt to understand the ways in which director Wes Anderson constructs and creates worlds within his films. A secondary aim of this dissertation is to generate an understanding of Wes Anderson as a contemporary film auteur and this will be established and emphasised by paying particular attention to his use of mise-en-scene and conducting a close textual analysis of a sample of Anderson's films. I will also analyse idea of 'constructedness' within Wes Anderson's films and how this plays a part in the universes he creates in the films in question. Matt Zoller Seitz finds Wes Anderson to be a world-builder sort of filmmaker, (who) construct(s) an entire universe that surrounds (his) characters (2013, p.251) and the director has become known for how he constructs the scenes in his films in order to create a fully fleshed out world. Wes Anderson has directed eight stylistically similar feature length films throughout his career and I attempt to understand his ways of worldmaking across all of these texts, but in order to create a stronger analysis in this for study I shall be focusing on just four of these films; The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Fantastic Mr Fox (2009), Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). I find that these chosen four texts best exemplify the concepts that shall be explored in this study and these films will be the foundation on which I build my analysis. I have chosen to explore this area of Anderson's filmmaking as these realms are hugely significant to the narrative and film style, and it is an area of research in which I find there to be a gap in academic research. After this introduction, this study shall be split into four further chapters. The first will examine the existing literature that is relevant to the analysis and this review will be divided into five subsections; Wes Anderson, Auteur Theory, Mise-en-scene, Constructedness and Worldmaking. Chapter three will be the methodology in which I shall outline how I will be conducting my analysis. The analysis shall again be split into five areas; Wes Anderson as an auteur, mise-en-scene, constructedness, worldmaking and I shall also include a section demonstrates what I have found from the films that couldn't be anticipated from the reviewed literature. The final chapter will summarise this analysis and indicate the conclusions that have been reached within this study.
