Abstract
This dissertation explores the two concepts; media events and news values, within a single
event. These concepts involve two different types of broadcasting but share common threads
that help to define each term (Dayan and Katz). There is a wealth of academic research of the
two terms as individual entities but little exploration of how the two ideas may be
intertwined. This study investigates the similarities and differences between the two terms
and how taken together they give greater significance to an event.
The study uses the event of the 2016 Scottish Cup Final as the context for the research. It
analyses if and how the event meets the requirements of a media event, drawing on a wide
range of theoretical studies on the matter and also looks for evidence of news values in a
sample of articles taken from the online print media. The aim of the study is to examine if a
news event can exist within a media event.
