(2014) What new measures can be taken to promote Disability Theatre performances in Scotland? A survey of marketing managers and audiences promoting and attending disability performances., no. 91.
What is the difference between mainstream theatre and disability theatre? Unfortunately this is not a joke and does not follow with a punch line. It is, in fact, a question which remains to be addressed. British national daily newspaper 'The Guardian' published several articles between 2007 and 2008 surrounding the topic of disability theatre and inclusion. A particular article featured: 'When will mainstream theatre embrace disabled companies?'(Gardner,2007).It is this article that has influenced and introduced this new study into discovering what new measures can be taken to promote disability theatre performances In Scotland? This question indicates that mainstream theatre has yet to take any action to fully include other forms of theatre, such as disability into its regime. Therefore, it is important for other forms of theatre which do not fall into the 'mainstream category' to continue to work independently and raise awareness to a wide range of audiences about their company by revising current funding and marketing strategies, in the aid to promote disability theatre performances in Scotland. The methods used to support this study will be a series of questionnaires presented to random audience members attending a mainstream performance, to discover their views and opinions on the study topic and test audience's current awareness, if any, on Disability Theatre in Scotland. Interviews will also be carried out to explore and discover what current measures existing Scottish Disability Theatre companies use to promote their company and upcoming performances. The expected outcomes from this study are that, only a small minority of the participants involved in this study will have some awareness and knowledge of Disability Theatre. Additionally, the interviewees might suggest better support from funding as a key factor to promoting Disability Theatre.
