The Effect of Tart Cherry Supplementation on Cardiovascular Health and Muscle Recovery in young adults aged 18-30
Abstract
Background – Diets low in fresh fruit and vegetables have been associated with a higher incidence of morbidity and mortality, while diets rich in polyphenols have been associated with beneficial effects in a range of health issues, and in particular cardiovascular diseases (CVD), as well muscle recovery after exercise. Anthocyanins, naturally present in a number of fruits and vegetables, are thought to be the source of the anti-inflammatory benefits. Tart cherries, notably Montmorency cherries, have shown beneficial effects in adults predisposed to CVD but the research conducted into young, healthy populations has been more contradictory. While the research studying muscle recovery after tart cherry supplementation has been more consistent there is little research studying recreationally active participants.
Objective – To investigate the effects of supplementation with a 100% Montmorency cherry capsule on cardiovascular health and muscle recovery after exercise.
Design – In a randomised, cross-over study design, 8 participants ages 18-30 were recruited. Initial measurements were taken to ascertain a baseline; cardiovascular health was assessed using pulse wave velocity and blood pressure, while muscle recovery was measured with a lactic acid clearance test after an ergometer cycle test. Participants were then supplemented with either cherry capsules or cornflour control for a week (2 capsules a day for 7 days). Participants then returned for the second round of tests and then completed a 5-day wash-out, after which they crossed over into the remaining group. Measurements were completed once again at the end of 7 days.
Results – No statistically significant data was observed in blood pressure, pulse wave velocity, or lactate clearance after supplementation with tart cherry capsules. There was, however, a statistically significant result (p=0.02) in the control PWV group.
Conclusion – To conclude, the findings from this study indicate that intake of a tart cherry supplementation over 7 days is not effective at improving cardiovascular health or muscle recovery in a healthy, young population.
