Item National Conversation: Benefit Administration(Scottish Government, 2009) McQuaid, R.; Bergmann, A.; Lindsay, C.; Elliott, IanItem Networks in family business: a multi-rational approach(2014-02-01) Seaman, Claire; McQuaid, R.; Pearson, M.Current research on networks in family businesses has approached the topic from a mono-rational perspective where the family, business and social networks are each considered in relative isolation. This paper argues that multi-rational approaches, which accept that the three groups of networks interact and overlap, offer a useful alternative perspective. In proposing the case for multiple rationalities as a framework within which family business networking can be viewed - and in putting forward an initial model - the paper allows the interaction of the different networks within the family business to be more fully acknowledged. Evidence from the literature is presented as a basis for further exploration using empirical approaches and it is emphasised that further and empirical approaches are required. 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.Item Social networking in family businesses in a local economy(Sage, 2017-07-30) Seaman, Claire; McQuaid, R.; Pearson, M.Small, family owned businesses make considerable contributions to local economies. The importance of social networks to their development is also well established. This paper explores the different types of distinct, but interlocking, social networks of a rural business family, focussing upon the interaction between family, business and friendship networks. It presents a multi-rational logic framework to consider how the differing logics of each of these network influences the development and behaviour of family businesses. The changes in networks over time and between generations of the family are also analysed and gaps or structural holes within the networks identified. Implications for research and policy are then set out.
