Item A new system for the measurement of displacements of the human body with widespread applications in human movement studies(1999) Rowe, P.; Durward, B.; Crosbie, J.; Fowler, V.; Baer, GillThis paper reports the development, construction and use of a new system for the measurement of linear kinematics in one, two or three dimensions. The system uses a series of rotary shaft encoders and inelastic tensioned strings to measure the linear displacement of key anatomical points in space. The system is simple, inexpensive, portable, accurate and flexible. It is therefore suitable for inclusion in a variety of motion analysis studies. Details of the construction, calibration and interfacing of the device to an IBM PC computer are given as is a full mathematical description of the appropriate measurement theory for one, two and three dimensions. Examples of the results obtained from the device during gait, running, rising to stand, sitting down and pointing with the upper limb are given. Finally it is proposed that, provided the constraints of the system are considered, this method has the potential to measure a variety of functional human movements simply and inexpensively and may therefore be a valuable addition to the methods available to the motion scientist.Item Feasibility of a perturbation protocol to quantify dynamic stability(Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society, 2016-05-20) Roeles, Sanne; Tarfali, Georgia; Childs, Craig; Steenbrink, Frans; Rowe, P.Falls in elderly are the leading cause of injury and therefore considered a major health problem in our ageing society [1]. A fall is the result of an inadequate restoration of balance when it is compromised. The use of external perturbations to evoke loss of balance in a standardized and safe manner is an increasingly popular approach to measur e dynamic stability, offering opp ortunities for fall prevention research [2]. Although a perturbation - paradigm is promising, little is known about the type of perturbation that is most informative to quantify dynamic stability. Therefore, the first aim of this feasibility study was to evaluate whether mechanical, visual and auditory perturbations can be used to affect dynamic stability. The second aim was to evaluate whether we can distinguish between younger and older adults using the response to external perturbations.Item Pain intensity and quality of life perception in children with hypermobility syndrome(2012-05) Fatoye, F.; Palmer, S.; Macmillan, Fiona; Rowe, P.Hypermobility syndrome (HMS) is a major source of morbidity in children. Impaired quality of life (QoL) has been observed recently in adults with HMS; however, this issue is yet to be investigated in children with this condition. This study compared pain intensity and QoL in children with HMS with healthy controls. It also examined the relationship between pain intensity and QoL in children with HMS. Following ethical approval, 29 children diagnosed with HMS and 37 healthy children aged 8-15 years participated. Informed written consent was obtained from participants and their parents/guardians. Average knee pain over the past week was examined using the Coloured Analogue Scale. QoL was measured via the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory. Mann-Whitney U tests were performed to compare pain and QoL scores between the two groups. Spearman Rho correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationship between pain and QoL. Overall QoL scores in each domain were significantly lower in children with HMS (all p < 0.001) compared with the controls. Pain intensity was significantly higher in children with HMS compared with their healthy counterparts (p < 0.001). A strong negative correlation was observed between pain intensity and overall QoL and all the domains (r range = -0.614 to -0.717; all p < 0.001). In conclusion, the findings of the present study imply that pain and QoL assessment might form important components of clinical examination for children diagnosed with HMS. These children may benefit from appropriate treatment programmes to alleviate pain intensity and improve QoL. 2011 Springer-Verlag.
