Background There is a growing interest in paying for performance as a means to align the incentives of health workers and health providers with public health goals. While the volume of schemes implementing paying for performance has increased over the last decade, rigorous evidence on the effectiveness of these strategies in improving health care and health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries is lacking. This is an update on the 2012 review on this topic, which had identified a limited evidence base from which to draw conclusions.
