The causes of the nancial crisis, which precipitated the deepest economic recession since the great depression of the early 1930s, have been well documented and debated (Crotty, 2009; Krugman, 2009; Stiglitz, 2009; Claessens et al., 2014). What has not been explored to the same extent is the gender impact of the recession and the subsequent economic recovery (Karamessini and Rubery, 2013; Rubery and Raerty, 2013; McKay et al., 2013; Pearson and Elson, 2015). This chapter provides an analysis of how the recession and the recovery process in Scotland have impacted on men and women, as well as considering the longer term implications of this impact.
