Abstract
This paper aims to give an overview of the 'professional
doctorate' and its special characteristics. Some of the
differences between this and a traditional Doctor of
Philosophy are considered, and a short reflection gives
insight into the author's personal doctoral journey. The
professional doctorate as a structured programme for
experienced practitioners to develop and advance their
practice is explored, with the interprofessional aspect of a
cohort-based programme stressed as a positive factor in
the student's journey. As reflection and reflexivity are
embedded within the professional doctorate, it is seen as
especially appropriate for current healthcare practice.
