An analytical exploration of culture: How does John McGrath's 'The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil' express Scottish culture through the themes of politics and ownership?

Abstract

This dissertation uses qualitative research methods to explore the themes of politics and ownership in John McGrath's 'The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil'. The expression of Scottish culture is analysed through these two themes. This dissertation considers and analyses different definitions of culture. In consideration of the original 1973 production and the new 2016 production, the context of politics is analysed in relation to the text, and the style and aesthetics of both productions. This dissertation explores Gaelic culture and the detrimental effects the Highland Clearances had upon its role in Scottish culture. In pairing the themes of politics and ownership with 'The Cheviot', this in-depth exploratory analysis of Scottish culture gains a deeper understanding of John McGrath's intentions with the play. The inclusion of the 2016 production offers valuable insight into the play's connection to present-day Scottish culture.
