Item Establishing the measurement properties of the Residential Environment Impact Scale (Version 4.0)(Taylor & Francis, 2022-12-09) Harrison, Michele; Forsyth, Kirsty; Murray, Aja Louise; Angarola, Rocco; Henderson, Shona; Fitzpatrick, Linda Irvine; Fisher, GailBackground Developed as an environment assessment informed by the Model of Human Occupation, the Residential Environment Impact Survey considered the physical, social and activity features of the environment, evaluating the impact of the environment on resident’s quality of life. Clinicians reported that the Residential Environment Impact Survey was a useful tool; however, it had not been structured to be a measurement tool and did not have established psychometric properties. Aims/objectives This study examines the psychometric properties of the restructured Residential Environment Impact Scale Version 4.0 (REIS), which measures the level of environment support provided to residents. Material and methods The REIS was completed across residential sites for people with complex mental health needs. A many facets Rasch analysis was conducted to establish the reliability and validity of the REIS. Results The REIS demonstrated reasonable psychometric properties, with items demonstrating internal scale validity and scale items following an expected pattern of increasingly challenging environment support. Conclusions and significance Initial evidence suggests that the REIS provides a valid and reliable measure of environment support, providing a detailed assessment of how physical, social and activity elements of the environment support or inhibit participation and can be applied across a range of living environments.Item Occupational alienation and the mental health of university students(FapUNIFESP (SciELO), 2022-06-08) Nañagas, Maria Lucia; Kantartzis, SarahAbstract Mental health, especially in the youth, has been a prevailing concern in recent years. University students are a particularly high-risk population for mental health problems. Changing perspectives in the field of mental health present the opportunity to explore this concept through an occupational justice lens – specifically that of occupational alienation. Through a brief review of relevant literature, this critical essay will explore the relationship among the concepts of alienation from both a sociology and occupational science perspective, and consider the insights that may be obtained through application of this concept to understanding the mental health of university students. The use of an occupational justice lens provides an opportunity for an alternative perspective when considering factors potentially contributing to the mental health problems in this population.Item Program Redesign Based on the Model of Human Occupation: Inpatient Services for People Experiencing Acute Mental Illness in the UK(2008) Melton, J.; Forsyth, Kirsty; Metherall, A.; Robinson, J.; Hill, J.; Quick, L.This paper discusses the current context of the UK mental health service system and the resulting need for program change within acute-care inpatient hospitals. The primary focus is to illustrate through practice example what can be done to support the delivery of client treatment packages by using the concepts described by the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO). The paper concentrates on explaining how MOHO has helped to guide program redesign and develop an Occupational Therapy Care Pathway to support occupation-focused services.
